Obiettivi formativi

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

The student is expected to develop  the ability to recognise the proper historical setting of a Greek literary text and the methodological skills to analyse and describe a text from a historical-linguistic  and literary point of view

The course takes place in the classroom, and does not include recording of the lessons (see the resolution of Council of the master's degree course - 06/03/2021); attendance in the classroom is highly recommended. There will be lectures, participative lessons and seminar activities.

Expected knowledge and skills will be verified through an oral exam (maximum 30/30) which includes at least two questions- the questions will test the theoretical knowledge and the theoretical-practical methodologies as explained in the lectures - on the characters of the greek literary language (i.e. the Homeric language)  and on the literary and linguistic commentary of the text read, after an translation of a significant portion of the Greek texts discussed in class

The teaching of Greek Language and Literature I and II also includes a preliminary question on the authors of Greek literary history from the 4th century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D. (a significant anthological reading of the texts in question is recommended; an indicative list of the authors required will be included in the teaching material). If you have already taken this part of the examination, please contact the teacher to agree on an equivalent programme.

Programma

The wrath of Achilles (and the many songs)

The Homeric epos, the expression of a traditional society, shows an extraordinary capacity for expansion and condensation of the material of the song (and of previous songs) and of the timing of events; at the same time, a great wealth of words of persuasion, supplication and prayer have led scholars to recognise in the poems a veritable 'culture of discourse'. Iliad I is exemplary in this regard.

The teaching will address the main features of the language of Epos, with particular attention to the specificity of the Homeric language, and will discuss possible performative situations and pragmatic functions in the text that has come down to us. The examination programme includes what was done in the lesson (the first song of the Iliad; an overview of the structure of the poem, with knowledge of the content of the 24 books).

If you are not attending, please contact the teacher to arrange an equivalent examination programme. The programme for non-attendees can be either entirely similar to the one for attendees, with some critical reading to replace the work done in the classroom on the texts, or even agreed on other topics in the presence of any specific interests.
